Rural infrastructure and broadband programs show ‘significant progress’ across SC

Some six years and $65 million later, two state initiatives, the Rural Initiative Grant and the Rural Broadband Grant programs, are showing “significant progress and measurable impacts” on rural infrastructure across South Carolina, according to a Monday statement from the SC Commerce Department.

The city of Hartsville is looking for a partner to develop a 10.5-acre site at the intersection of 4th Street and Railroad Avenue. In a statement Monday, the city issued a request for proposal, saying it is “seeking a visionary development partner for a premier mixed-use project ... in the heart of downtown Hartsville.”

Cyclic discusses construction, environment at town hall

Rare earth element recycling company Cyclic Materials hosted a town hall at McBee High School on June 4. The Toronto-based company had announced in January it would invest $82.6 million and add 91 jobs in a facility in McBee. The company invited the public to attend the event, where it explained what it does and shared information about the project’s construction timetable, hiring and environmental precautions. Cylic also opened the town hall up to questions from residents.

Projects in 4 Pee Dee counties receive rural infrastructure grants

The SC Rural Infrastructure Authority has awarded $29 million in grants for capital improvement projects in 16 counties, including four in the Pee Dee. The authority said in a statement Tuesday the grants will go toward improving water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure, benefiting more than 50,000 households and businesses and bolstering services that support economic growth.

The town of Chesterfield plans to establish a farmers market downtown, according to Administrator Cecil Kimrey, who said in a phone interview, “We’re in the initial stages. We haven’t finalized the site.”

Hartsville to construct connected multiuse paths

The city of Hartsville has taken on two infrastructure projects that one official says will connect the town in ways it has “not had connection before.” An east-west multiuse path will run down Washington Street from 14th Street to 4th Street, and a north-south multiuse path will follow alongside 4th Street from Coker Avenue to US Highway 15 Bypass, according to Chastity Jenkins, controller for the city of Hartsville.
