The investment will support qualifying projects "aimed at strengthening local opportunity and improving the quality of life" of residents, according to the statement. Marion County will allocate the money to projects in line with state and federal guidelines, "specifically those that enhance local infrastructure, foster economic growth, or improve community services."
According to the statement, the South Carolina Rural Development Act of 1996 affords the cooperative a credit against its annual state license fee. The utility tax credit can then be invested in "qualifying projects to benefit the area," the statement said.
The 1996 Act amends the Code of Laws of South Carolina, 1976, and provides guidelines for the use of the state rural infrastructure fund and for redevelopment fees by redevelopment authorities.
