Pittsburgh-based Niche.com is an online resource that reviews and ranks K–12 schools, colleges, cities, neighborhoods and companies nationwide.
Niche gave GSSM an A-plus grade in the categories of academics, administration, clubs and activities, college prep, diversity, resources and facilities. The school received a B-plus in sports and a B-minus for food.
Niche uses data from public sources, including the US Department of Education and National Science Foundation, as well as millions of reviews from students, parents and residents, according to its website.
The website ranked GSSM’s sister school, the NC School of Science and Mathematics in Durham, the top public high school in the country.
Governor’s School President Danny Dorsel said in a Sept. 28 GSSM statement, “While we don’t chase the rankings, seeing our community’s efforts recognized nationally is a proud moment for all of South Carolina. We share it with the outstanding K-12 schools and educators across our state who prepare students to thrive at GSSM, and with our state leaders and legislators whose belief in our mission and continued support make these opportunities possible for students across South Carolina.”
The SC Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics is a residential high school for academically motivated students in eleventh and twelfth grades that provides a “transformative education focused on science, technology, engineering and math,” according to its website.
